SUMMARY:Laguna Coastal Clean Up Day - Host: ECO-Warrior
DESCRIPTION:The Laguna Beach community is invited to come together and clean up our coastal wonderland at this year’s California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday\, Sept 21\, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Aliso Beach County Park. The event is once again hosted by James Pribram and the ECO-Warrior Foundation. \nLunch will be provided for volunteers by Chronic Tacos and parking passes will also be available for volunteers. All cleanup materials will be provided by ECO-Warrior – including waivers\, gloves\, and bags. \nCalifornia Coastal Cleanup Day\, taking place on Saturday\, Sept 21\, is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a chance for Californians to join people around the world in expressing their respect for our oceans and waterways. It’s an opportunity for the community to demonstrate its desire for clean water and healthy marine life. And it’s a moment to share with one’s neighbors\, family\, and friends coming together to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our environment. \n“Coastal Cleanup Day is quite frankly the greatest and biggest day we have – in not only protecting but also celebrating our beaches\, oceans\, parks\, and waterways for generations to come\,” says ECO-Warrior Foundation Executive Director James Pribram. THE ECO-Warrior Foundation is a California and Federal nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving our oceans and beaches through: education\, activation\, and motivation. The foundation was created out of one man’s passion for the ocean\, Pribram’s courage to fight for a cause he believes in\, and his hope to inspire and encourage others to always protect our coastal environments. \nSee full story …

SUMMARY:Girls' Night Out - Boys & Girls Club Laguna Beach
DESCRIPTION:For 11 years now\, the fabulously successful Girl’s Night Out\, a fundraising event for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach\, has been hosted at the breathtaking Rockledge estate. Sadly\, this will be its last year as the Rockledge homeowners have new plans for their future. \nAll the more reason to go all-in this year\, yes? \nOn Sept. 19th\, the $150 ticket finds you a perch on the – literal – edge of the continent in one of the most celebrated homes on the Southern California coast. The all-girls’ event proffers all-evening pampering\, shopping and swag bags to end all swag bags. \nFor nine years now\, my friends\, Archie and Gretchen\, at Starfish Laguna Beach have been the catering host for the event. The trays of freshly made food never stop coming. \nThis year\, in addition to a number of “most wanted” silent auction items\, Newport Beach’s Winston’s Crown Jewelers has donated more than $10\,000 in diamond-studded jewelry and white pearl strands. Guests simply purchase a $75 “opportunity drawing” ticket and cross their fingers for the announcement that will bring them a thousands-plus jewelry box of goodness from Winston’s. It’s a great fun night of networking and shopping in the name of one of Laguna Beach’s finest non-profits around\, The Boys & Girls Club. See you there! \nClick for tickets here …

SUMMARY:Pancake Breakfast - Heisler Park
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, for well over 20 years now\, Laguna Beach’s Exchange Club members have joined forces with the Laguna City Police and Fire Departments to shell out thousands of pancakes in the “Take Back the Town Pancake Breakfast” at Heisler Park. \nDespite the fact that these dedicated “pancake chefs” are setting up shop at about 6:00 a.m.\, and slaving over hot griddles till about 11:00 a.m.\, these folks seem to love it.  The breakfast opens for business at 7:00 a.m.; the real crowds start to gather at about 8:30 or so. And\, while there are hundreds of local residents in attendance\, you’re not going to be carded for residency. Just be warned – no one but no one gets the pancake batter recipe. (Hey. Don’t fight The Law on this one.) \nCome on down to Heisler Park – certainly one of Laguna Beach’s finest parks – and say thanks to the people who watch over us.

That evening\, it was a Luther Vandross tribute\, and he brought the house down. \nHe’s back by popular demand and – fittingly – the second to last musician to close the season for 2019. SUMMARY:Wine & Chocolate Tastings + Black Market Trust
DESCRIPTION:My favorite weekly event at the Festival of Art? Easy. Thursday evening’s “Art\, Jazz\, Wine & Chocolate.” It’s a great evening of wine and chocolate tastings\, with great music to boot! \nI’m not sure that this event needs a lot of salesmanship. When you have art\, live jazz\, wine and chocolate at your disposal for two full hours\, life can’t get much better. It happens every Thursday night through the festival season from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. \nYou’ll be able to sample a variety of Kendall Jackson wines\, each of which is expertly paired with a variety of high end chocolates from XAN Confections. As you enjoy your chocolates and wine\, you have free run of the Festival grounds to peruse art from 140 California-based artists. Meanwhile\, different jazz ensembles entertain weekly. The last event\, Thursday\, Aug. 29th  features Black market Trust\, a five member “gypsy jazz” band.  \nTickets\nTickets for “Art\, Jazz\, Wine & Chocolate” are $20\, which does not include Festival of Arts admission or reserved seating. You must be 21 to participate.\nThe Festival is always free to Laguna Beach residents and military. Otherwise\, General Admission on Thursday evenings is $10\, $7 for seniors and $5 children\, ages 6-12. Gates open at noon. \nVIP Seats a Plus\nIf you’re more interested in sitting and sipping vs. walking through the art show\, limited reserved seating is available for the jazz at an additional $35 per person. Go online to http://foapom.com\, click the CALENDAR\, and then choose your Thursday evening attendance. You will be able to reserve your Thursday VIP seats from any Thursday page. \nSee you at the FOA!

SUMMARY:"The Vic" - World's Largest Skim Contest
DESCRIPTION:In May this year\, the Pros’ United Skim Tour began 2018’s seasonal run for the crown at a full-on gallop. The Tour hits both coasts\, with Cabo San Lucas and Santa Cruz early in the season\, followed by East Coast Outer Banks (NC) and Dewey Beach\, Delaware continuing to rack up points for frontrunners. \nNothing\, however is bigger than “The Vic” Skim Contest\, the granddaddy event of them all. And it all happens again this year on the weekend of Aug. 17th and 18th\, 2019 at Aliso Creek Beach. Initially a sport for just the boys\, girls and women entered the scene several years ago and continue to pull in championing crowds each year on the beach. \nYear to year\, the worldwide leaderboard tends to belong to South Laguna (SoLag) skimboarders who began skimming as mere groms\, i.e. Blair Conklin\, Sam Stinnett and East Coast’s Austin Keen\, who transplanted himself here so long ago that we all figure he was born here. Given that skimboarding was actually and officially launched many decades ago in South Laguna Beach\, it’s no surprise that Laguna’s own continue to dominate the worldwide scene. This year\, however\, we’ve seen some jostling from the East Coast crowd. \nSurf is supposed to be cooperating this weekend\, and the crowds will be large. Come on down to see the sport that was invented right here on our SoLag beaches. \nSee details on frontrunners and the day’s activities here
