SUMMARY:"The Vic" - World's Largest Skim Contest
DESCRIPTION:In May this year\, the Pros’ United Skim Tour began 2018’s seasonal run for the crown at a full-on gallop. The Tour hits both coasts\, with Cabo San Lucas and Santa Cruz early in the season\, followed by East Coast Outer Banks (NC) and Dewey Beach\, Delaware continuing to rack up points for frontrunners. \nNothing\, however is bigger than “The Vic” Skim Contest\, the granddaddy event of them all. And it all happens again this year on the weekend of Aug. 17th and 18th\, 2019 at Aliso Creek Beach. Initially a sport for just the boys\, girls and women entered the scene several years ago and continue to pull in championing crowds each year on the beach. \nYear to year\, the worldwide leaderboard tends to belong to South Laguna (SoLag) skimboarders who began skimming as mere groms\, i.e. Blair Conklin\, Sam Stinnett and East Coast’s Austin Keen\, who transplanted himself here so long ago that we all figure he was born here. Given that skimboarding was actually and officially launched many decades ago in South Laguna Beach\, it’s no surprise that Laguna’s own continue to dominate the worldwide scene. This year\, however\, we’ve seen some jostling from the East Coast crowd. \nSurf is supposed to be cooperating this weekend\, and the crowds will be large. Thursday evening’s “Art\, Jazz\, Wine & Chocolate.” It’s a great evening of wine and chocolate tastings\, with great music to boot! \nI’m not sure that this event needs a lot of salesmanship. When you have art\, live jazz\, wine and chocolate at your disposal for two full hours\, life can’t get much better. It happens every Thursday night through the festival season from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \nYou’ll be able to sample a variety of Kendall Jackson wines\, each of which is expertly paired with a variety of high end chocolates from XAN Confections. As you enjoy your chocolates and wine\, you have free run of the Festival grounds to peruse art from 140 California-based artists. Meanwhile\, different jazz ensembles entertain weekly. Thursday\, Aug. 15th  features jazz keyboadrist Scott Wilkie. His latest album\, StudioLIVE\, was the #1 Hot New Release on Amazon for three straight months last year. The entire project was recorded in a matter of hours\, live and unedited\, and is now available as a full-length video release as well. \nKnown for his fiery live performances\, Wilkie’s contemporary jazz recordings are popular worldwide\, and he has toured throughout the US\, Asia\, Latin America and Europe.\nTickets\nTickets for “Art\, Jazz\, Wine & Chocolate” are $20\, which does not include Festival of Arts admission or reserved seating. DESCRIPTION:Three longtime and popular artists – Mark Jacobucci\, Mike Tauber and Anthony Salvo – are offering specific painting subjects on Saturday evenings. This is super cool (and non-intimidating fun)\, whether you choose to paint sunsets\, donuts or the Monterey coastline. These sell out very quickly\, so get on it. Here are notes on each week’s artist and subject matter that you’ll be painting and taking home with you. \nCost is $75 and includes supplies\, complimentary wine or beverage and Festival admission. Classes begin at 8:30 p.mm. and are 1.5 hours. You must be 21 years of age or older. Reservations are absolutely required. \nOn August 10th\, Anthony Salvo instructs on painting the Monterey Coast. \nAnthony Salvo has lived in Southern California since the age of 12. That’s when he discovered oil painting.  Always drawing and painting as a young child he knew that art would be his vocation. With an impressive art background spanning over many years\, Anthony enjoys plein air landscape painting as well as studio painting.

Fortunately\, she moved her popular business across all the states in between\, and will continue to handle just about anything you can throw at her\, from baby showers to toddler to really-old-birthdays\, bar and bat mitzvahs\, giant weddings\, non-profit galas and more. And she does it in a super classy\, creative way. \nCheck out her new shop this Saturday. Even if you don’t have a party in mind … you’ll probably find a reason once you’re there. DESCRIPTION:My favorite weekly event at the Festival of Art? Easy. Thursday evening’s “Art\, Jazz\, Wine & Chocolate.” It’s a great evening of wine and chocolate tastings\, with great music to boot! \nI’m not sure that this event needs a lot of salesmanship. When you have art\, live jazz\, wine and chocolate at your disposal for two full hours\, life can’t get much better. It happens every Thursday night through the festival season from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. \nYou’ll be able to sample a variety of Kendall Jackson wines\, each of which is expertly paired with a variety of high end chocolates from XAN Confections. As you enjoy your chocolates and wine\, you have free run of the Festival grounds to peruse art from 140 California-based artists. Meanwhile\, different jazz ensembles entertain weekly. Thursday\, Aug. 8th  features renowned singer/songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Kleber Jorge.  \nHis debut solo CD Voltar Pro Rio (Back to Rio) produced by Dori Caymmi for Sonic Images is a favorite of Brazilian jazz fans throughout the world. His vocals are described as masterful\, soulful and capturing the essence of Brazilian emotion. In addition to touring with Sergio Mendes\, Kleber is frequently invited to collaborate with many musicians both in America and Brazil. He has recorded and toured with Boney James\, Sadao Watanabe\, Jane Monheit\, Diogo Nogueira\, Kevyn Lettau\, Chris Bennett\, Rita Lee\, Fabiana Passoni\, Lisa Ono\, Leny Andrade and others. \nTickets\nTickets for “Art\, Jazz\, Wine & Chocolate” are $20\, which does not include Festival of Arts admission or reserved seating. You must be 21 to participate.\nThe Festival is always free to Laguna Beach residents and military. Otherwise\, General Admission on Thursday evenings is $10\, $7 for seniors and $5 children\, ages 6-12. DESCRIPTION:Years ago\, Ruben Flores of Laguna Nursery fame started the Garden Walk at his original location at Mountain and Coast Highway and continued the tradition after moving the nursery to North Laguna at Jasmine. \nThis is absolutely the best tour in Laguna Beach. And it’s year-round! Every time I go on these walks\, I have so much darned fun. Ruben is a walking Wiki of every imaginable tree\, shrub\, flowering weirdness and weed. \nBut it doesn’t stop there. Because Ruben has expanded his landscape architect business to interior rescue as well\, Ruben knows every architectural style (and where people mix and match building materials or all the wrong plants in the rudest of ways). He talks about pavers and sprinkler placement and where the sun will shine on an inappropriately located plant. \nIt’s the most imaginative way to really discover the magic of Laguna Beach. Usually about two hours in length\, the Garden Walk is just $10 for thousands of dollars of advice.
