SUMMARY:Bluebird Free Concerts in the Park: Woodie & the Longboards
DESCRIPTION:Each year on July and August Sunday evenings\, our more southerly Bluebird Park comes alive with live music that varies from Grateful Dead tribute bands to great rock and roll\, Reggae and jazz. \nAlthough most locals are very familiar with Bluebird Park\, newcomers and visitors might not know it even exists. SUMMARY:Ruben Flores' Garden Walk
DESCRIPTION:Years ago\, Ruben Flores of Laguna Nursery fame started the Garden Walk at his original location at Mountain and Coast Highway and continued the tradition after moving the nursery to North Laguna at Jasmine. \nEvery time I go on these walks\, I have so much darned fun. Ruben is a walking Wiki of every imaginable tree\, shrub\, flowering weirdness and weed. \nBut it doesn’t stop there. Because he has expanded his landscape architect business to interior rescue as well\, Ruben knows every architectural style (and where people mix and match building materials or all the wrong plants in the rudest of ways). He talks about pavers and sprinkler placement and where the sun will shine on an inappropriately located plant. \nIt’s the most imaginative way to really discover the magic of Laguna Beach. Usually about two hours in length\, the Garden Walk is just $10 for thousands of dollars of advice. Wear good walking shoes and bring water. \nLaguna Nursery and Ruben’s landscape business\, Visionscape\, Inc. are located together at 397 North Coast Highway (Jasmine cross street). Call to reserve your Garden Walk at (949) 494-5200.

SUMMARY:"The Vic" - World's Largest Skim Contest
DESCRIPTION:In May this year\, the Pros’ United Skim Tour began 2018’s seasonal run for the crown at a full-on gallop. The Tour hits both coasts\, with Cabo San Lucas and Santa Cruz early in the season\, followed by East Coast Outer Banks (NC) and Dewey Beach\, Delaware continuing to rack up points for frontrunners. \nNothing\, however is bigger than “The Vic” Skim Contest\, the granddaddy event of them all. And it all happens again this year on the weekend of Aug. 18-19th at Aliso Creek Beach. \nYear to year\, the worldwide leaderboard tends to belong to South Laguna (SoLag) guys who began skimming as mere groms. Given that skimboarding was actually and officially launched many decades ago in South Laguna Beach\, it’s no surprise that Laguna’s own continue to dominate the worldwide scene. \nSee details on frontrunners and the day’s activities here

SUMMARY:Quattrosound
DESCRIPTION:Quattrosound is an innovative acoustic ensemble that skillfully blends their classical and jazz training with a wide-range of personal music influences to create a uniquely engaging sound. The four musicians are equally astute at playing a Bach Suite\, rocking out to Led Zeppelin or interpreting a piece by Chick Corea. Their playful passion captures enthusiasm from audiences of all ages. \nIndividually these four accomplished musicians based in Los Angeles have played with the likes of Bocelli\, Barbara Streisand\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Annie Lennox\, Michael Jackson\, Layla Hathaway\, Ricky Martin and Gloria Estefan. Together\, Quattrosound raises the bar of originality with clever compositions and arrangements that “pay homage to the classics” and forge a new contemporary sound.

SUMMARY:Bluebird Free Concerts in the Park - ABBA Gold: Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Each year on July and August Sunday evenings\, our more southerly Bluebird Park comes alive with live music that varies from Grateful Dead tribute bands to great rock and roll\, Reggae and jazz. \nAlthough most locals are very familiar with Bluebird Park\, newcomers and visitors might not know it even exists. This is such a lovely park. Unlike the gorgeous ocean setting of the Heisler Park concert series in May\, Bluebird Park is more like sitting in a meadow clearing amidst towering trees. It’s quite serene and lovely. The music\, though\, is far from serene. This is a fun\, rocking evening no matter who’s on stage. \nPack up your chairs and picnic blankets (no placement before 3:00 p.m. please) and tote in a picnic basket with all your favorites. It’s a great friendly crowd of locals and visitors alike\, and a perfect way to end a weekend and begin the week ahead. \nOn Sunday\, August 5th\, it’s ABBA Gold\, a tribute band. Returning favorite ABBA Gold\, a “master class in pop music.” Relive your favorite (high school? college?) days and tunes with this UK-based band. \nBluebird Park is located on Cress Street between Temple Terrace and Bluebird Canyon Drive.

SUMMARY:Beachfront Cinema: Jaws
DESCRIPTION:Every now and then\, an event is so cool I just have to mention it\, even if it falls outside of the confines of Laguna Beach. \nPerhaps in keeping with Shark Month\, see a GIANT screening of Jaws (21+) in HUNTINGTON BEACH on one of the largest inflatable outdoor movie screens in California. Sorry\, but I’m a super JAWS fan\, and what better venue? (I know\, I know . . .) \nArrive early for pre-movie festivities such as live entertainment\, games and contests. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase from food booths and the beach bar. Pre-movie activities 5 p.m.\, show time at dusk (8 p.m.). $15 GA\, $49 VIP (includes jumbo 2-person bean bag). Lifeguard tower 14 at Huntington State Beach. \nLittle known trivia facts about the filming of Jaws – pulled from this great article – read it in full!  CNN Jaws Movie  \n\nThe movie’s 25-foot great white shark was played by three full-scale mechanical models towed by submerged “sleds” or guided by hidden scuba divers. The crew nicknamed the shark “Bruce” after Spielberg’s lawyer\, Bruce Ramer. Spielberg\, frustrated by the shark’s frequent malfunctions\, had another name for it: “the great white turd.”\nFor the famous scene in which Quint recounts the sinking of the USS Indianapolis\, Shaw persuaded Spielberg to let him have a few drinks before the cameras started rolling. But Shaw got so drunk\, he had to be carried to the set and couldn’t get through his lines. He later called Spielberg and apologized; they shot the scene again the next day\, and Shaw nailed it.\nSpielberg wasn’t satisfied with the scene in which Hooper investigates a fisherman’s sunken boat and is jolted when the man’s disembodied head floats out of the hull. So Spielberg recruited a small crew and reshot the scene in film editor Verna Fields’ backyard swimming pool in Encino\, California. To make the clear\, chlorinated water match the murkier look of the ocean\, crew members poured a gallon of milk into the pool.

SUMMARY:Laguna Beach First Thursdays Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:The art season in Laguna Beach flourishes year round with First Thursdays Art Walk. This educational monthly art event\, held on the first Thursday of every month from 6 – 9pm\, celebrates the diverse cultural art scene of Laguna Beach and is free to the public. \nThere. That’s the official line from Laguna Beach … now\, for the real scoop: \nThe Laguna Beach Art Walk is a great bit of strolling and trolley-ing fun throughout Laguna Beach\, all packed into just a few hours on the first Thursday of each month.\nAugust’s event on Aug. 2nd promises to be a biggie as it’s the last official Art Walk of summer. Expect many\, many galleries to be open throughout the City\, and expect hundreds and hundreds of milling throngs as people drop in on their favorite galleries to chat with artists in person\, grab great art at sometimes-special pricing\, sip wine and gnosh on free goodies. \nYou can also expect to see restaurants and other retail shops in on the game of it\, too\, keeping their doors open well past their usual closing hours. \nI usually head out with a few friends and we make a night of it with both walking and trolley rides. \nTROLLEY SERVICE\nFree trolley service for art walk starts at 6:30 pm and ends at 9:30 pm. Trolleys begin at the Laguna Art Museum (north) and Bluebird Canyon Road (south). The trolley route runs as far north as Viejo Street\, up Laguna Canyon Road as far as Canyon Acres\, and south to Bluebird Canyon Road. Map \nPARKING\nMetered parking is available along Coast Hwy. and a few blocks inland on either side of the street and is free after 7:00 pm. If you prefer\, you may park in the residential area located 2-3 blocks inland from Coast Hwy.

SUMMARY:Bluebird Free Concerts in the Park - Lost Beach: Indie
\nOn Sunday\, July 29th\, it’s the Lost Beach Band. Yet another new selection for Bluebird\, this is a great indie rock group with a sound that reminds me of a mix between U2 and … hmm … maybe Collective Soul. A little sassy\, woozy and super talented\, lead singer Jonny Perdue is a Texas native who discovered Cali beaches and decided to never leave. They released their first EP last year\, and it’s been climbing the charts with alacrity. \nBluebird Park is located on Cress Street between Temple Terrace and Bluebird Canyon Drive.
