It may only be February, but the most popular Laguna Beach summer camp is already taking registration … and these spaces fill up faster than a seal can gulp down his daily sushi.
Camp Pinniped at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center has announced its 2014 dates, a series of 7 camp weeks beginning June 30th. As many locals know, the PMMC is a non-profit organization solely devoted to rescuing and saving the lives of marine mammals.
How many kids in this country of ours get to spend a portion of their summer witnessing a marine mammal hospital in action? Each day, a class of 24 excited kids is provided boots and slickers for a most unique Laguna Beach summer camp. Friendly staffers and lively veterinarians teach these kids how to rescue and help rehabilitate seals and sea lions so that they can be returned to the ocean happy and healthy.
Each day of the weeklong camp offers up a different theme as children explore marine biology, create ocean arts and crafts, play games and even learn how to make fish smoothies for our hospitalized, dear patients. The actual camp runs Monday through Thursday, 9:0 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with Friday being a fun “beach day” from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Although a full seven weeks are offered to accommodate the best week for your child, these spaces go very, very quickly. The camp is usually filled to the brim before Easter – just warning you!
$315 for the week, $295 for PMMC Harbor Seal members
