Oddly, as Laguna Beach goes, it’s a fairly quiet weekend this first week of March, primarily because so many planned activities in the past have been a bit detoured with our famous Patriot’s Day Parade on Saturday. BUT there’s something for everyone here, even on what we call a “quiet” weekend.
So, let’s start with the Laguna Beach 45th Annual Patriot’s Day Parade – Sat, March 5th
I’ve already sent you fair warning about the traffic delays around the event this Saturday – the parade itself is just from 11 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m., but the traffic detours begin well in advance and after the event. There are 104 participants marching in the parade (and I mean 1 participant could be a group of 30 teachers . . . ) This year’s theme is “Welcome Home,” aptly named for our soldiers who have and are returning to families and friends. My dear buddy, Frank Kenely, is the “Patriot of the Year” and deservedly so as he’s a lovely 93-year-old who was freed from a WWII POW camp and settled in South Laguna decades ago. rank’s been struggling with his health this last week, so he won’t be able to make the parade – he will be missed!
Other events I’d recommend in our fine town this weekend:
Tired Of Taking So-So Photos? 2 Digital Camera Workshops, Saturday and Sunday (March 5th & 6th)
[singlepic id=194 w=320 h=240 float=right]
One of our favorite “all things art” teachers, Mary Guilano, is at it again and still has a few openings for her weekend photography workshops. Learn basic to advanced skills in her indoor Digital Photo class on Saturday, March 5th at the United Methodist Church on Wesley (just past Albertson’s), or RSVP for a Digital Photography Walking Workshop on Main Beach on Sunday, 8 a.m. – noon. (How cool is that?!) Sign up at her web site, www.MyArtistLoft.com or call direct at 949-371-3375.
“I Hear The Train A Comin’ . . .. ” It’s a Johnny Cash Tribute at Mozambique – Sat.March 5th
Wear your best black when you hit the Cash’d Out tribute event at Laguna Beach’s Mozambique lounge on Saturday night, March 5th. This band has some serious fans, so be sure to get there early for great seating before the band starts in at 8:45 p.m.
And If You’re Looking for the REAL Thing – Stray Cat Strut with Laguna Beach’s Own Lee Rocker – Saturday, March 5th
OK, I don’t normally toot a horn for another town’s event, but this one happens to feature our longtime Laguna Beach resident Lee Rocker, who first delivered his unique, indelible bass and cello groove to The Stray Cats back in 1979. Lee Rocker is a cool cat in this town of ours – we love having him aboard. Now in his solo career and just back from a Broadway stint in The Big Apple, he’s at Santa Ana’s Galaxy Theater at 8 p.m. Get your tickets and fast at www.galaxytheater.com or by calling 714-957-0600.
Wrap It Up With A Burgundy Wine Tasting Event at the Montage – Sunday, March 6th
As weekend wrap-ups go, you can’t do much better than a leisurely afternoon at the Laguna Beach Montage Resort tasting the finest Burgundy wines. Part of their Artistry of Wine tasting events, this take place in the Loft and cost is $35 per person.
Heading to Happy Hour at the Rooftop for another beautiful sunset. I’ll be writing more about this lovely Laguna Beach landmark this weekend!
Serious addiction to your site lol, a lot of your writes have definitely helped me out on weekends and with plans for friends. Looking forward to more posts on the great town of Laguna Beach. Don’t stop!
